The Wyspiański Silesian Theatre in Katowice is the largest drama stage in Upper Silesia. Its traditions date back to 1922, when in the capital of the new, autonomous Silesian voivodeship forming part of reborn Poland, a Polish theater was established. The theater building was erected in the eastern part of the Katowice market square in the years 1905-1907 for the German City Theatre. Architect Karl Moritz gave it the neo-Classicist style with elements of Modernism.
Theatre mission is to be national stage in Silesia. In its repertoire, above all on Main Stage, permanet place take outstanding items of Polish and world classic drama. In last year openings had also drama written in Silesian local dialect ("Polterabend" by Stanisław Mutz, dir. Tadeusz Bradecki and "The Fifth Quarter of the Globe" by Kazimierz Kutz, dir. Robert Talarczyk). In 1981 came into being Chamber Stage where most often are staged modern Polish and foreign dramas. Third place of presentation is Malarnia (Paint Shop) Stage, created in 1992 in former Masonic lodge premises. Recently, the Silesian Theatre presentations are also staged on The Mall Stage located inside a nearby shopping centre.
